He was twenty-four when he came to California, with his fathers' (Michael Wagner) family in 1886. Three years later he married Anna Marie Herberger, of St. Cloud, MN, who had also come to California with her parents (Fred Herberger) in 1887. John's dad gave the young couple ninety acres as a wedding present and to this nucleus, he added 160 more acres in 1892. The ten acre homestead at the southeast corner of Manchester and Western Avenues and where his son Otto and wife Margaret (Rupp) built their first home is where I was born and raised.
